18 Women, 6 Teams: House of Hybrid Takes On The Butterfly Effect

By Kurt

We’re not sending a team to The Butterfly Effect. We’re sending six.

On June 28, eighteen women from House of Hybrid will walk onto the competition floor at Perfit Training Centre in Ballarat, Victoria, to take on Australia’s largest all-female functional fitness competition. Six teams of three, from one gym in Lobethal. It’s a long way from the Adelaide Hills to Ballarat, and that’s exactly the point. When something is worth doing, you travel for it, and you do it together.

What is The Butterfly Effect?

The Butterfly Effect started in Australia in 2015 with a handful of teams and a simple idea: build a competition where every woman belongs, at a time when body image and inclusivity were barely part of the fitness conversation. Ten years on it’s grown into the world’s leading all-female functional fitness festival, with thousands of women competing across Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and it raises money and awareness for the Butterfly Foundation, the national charity for eating disorders.

It is, in their words, a celebration of strength, unity and community. Not comparison. Not perfection. Showing up, lifting each other higher, and being proud of what your body can do.

That lines up with how we think about training, so it was an easy yes.

The format

The Butterfly Effect runs in teams of three, and each team takes on four workouts across the day. There are three divisions so the day works for everyone:

  • Advanced for athletes chasing the podium, with the heavier lifts and the technical skills.
  • Intermediate for solid all-rounders with some experience under the belt.
  • Hybrid for first-time competitors and anyone still finding their confidence, built around accessible movements with no complex barbell or gymnastics skills.

You do not need to be a “CrossFitter” to compete. The workouts are released months in advance so there’s plenty of time to prepare, and you can move divisions once you’ve seen them. It is designed, deliberately, to be something a normal person can train for and finish proud.

Why this one matters to us

Women’s strength is close to the heart of what we do at House of Hybrid. Too many women have only ever been sold fitness as a way to shrink. We coach it as a way to get powerful: to deadlift something heavy, to string together pull-ups, to walk out of a session standing taller than they walked in.

The Butterfly Effect is that idea on a stage, with a few hundred women cheering each other through it. Taking a team is our way of backing the women who train here, and showing anyone in the Adelaide Hills who’s been curious that this door is open to them too.

The teams

Six teams of three are flying the flag for House of Hybrid in Ballarat. The team names alone tell you everything about the spirit they’re bringing:

  • Hybrid X: Katy, Lucy and Nat
  • Hybrid Wrecks: Nadia, Jacki and Sarah Grace
  • Consistently Average: Chloe, Kate and Susan
  • 3 Peas in a WOD: Sarah, Chaz and Marissa
  • Storm Sisters: Lydia, Pam and Annette
  • SZND, Salty & Savage: Katherine, Amanda and Maddi

For some of them it’s a first competition, which is exactly the kind of dare we’re here for. They’ve been putting in the work in the lead-up, week after week, and we could not be prouder to send them.

Want to be on the next team?

You do not have to be “ready”. Nobody is, the first time. You just have to start.

If competing one day appeals, even quietly, the best move is to begin training with intent now. Come in, get coached, get strong, and when the next team forms you’ll be in the conversation. Everyone on this team started as someone who wasn’t sure they could.

Start with a 7-day free trial and tell whoever’s on the floor you’re interested in the Butterfly Effect. We’ll take it from there.

Dare. Dream. Do.

Follow along: we’ll be sharing the build-up and the day itself on Instagram and Facebook. Come cheer them on.
